Life has a way of moving quickly through the parts that matter most.
Big decisions often get made in moments of excitement, transition, or pressure — marriage, money, homes, career shifts — long before anyone slows down to explain the fine print.
Life With Footnotes exists to slow things down just enough to ask better questions.
Why I Started This
I didn’t start Life With Footnotes because I have everything figured out.
I started it because I didn’t — at least not early.
I’ve been financially independent since I was young, built a long career in corporate America, raised a child largely on my own, owned multiple homes, and made decisions I felt confident about at the time. Some worked out well. Others were far more expensive — financially and emotionally — than I understood going in.
What surprised me most wasn’t the mistakes themselves.
It was how little practical, calm guidance existed before those decisions were made.
So much advice comes after the fact. Or it’s framed in extremes: fear-based warnings, rigid rules, or glossy success stories that skip the messy middle.
I wanted something different.
What This Site Is (and Isn’t)
Life With Footnotes is a place to document what I’ve learned — and what I wish I had paused to understand earlier — with honesty and context.
It is:
- Thoughtful, prevention-focused writing
- Plain-English explanations of decisions that quietly shape financial lives
- Reflections grounded in lived experience, not theory
- A space for women who want clarity without being talked down to
It is not:
- Financial, legal, or tax advice
- A promise of perfect outcomes
- A place for fear, shame, or hustle culture
The goal isn’t to tell anyone what to do.
It’s to make sure fewer decisions get made on autopilot.
Who This Is For
This site is for women who:
- Built independence before they felt financially fluent
- Took responsibility early and adapted often
- Want to be thoughtful — not reactive — about major life transitions
- Believe it’s okay to learn some things later, as long as you learn them well
If you’ve ever thought “I wish I had known this sooner,” you’ll probably feel at home here.
Why “Footnotes”
Because the most important details are rarely in the headline.
They’re in the margins. The assumptions. The default settings. The things everyone assumes you already understand — until you don’t.
Life With Footnotes is about noticing those details while there’s still time to choose differently.
A Final Note
I’m not writing from a place of authority.
I’m writing from a place of attention.
This site is a record of learning — past and present — shared with the hope that it helps someone else pause, ask a better question, or protect what they’ve worked hard to build.
If you’re thinking ahead — or revisiting decisions already made — you’re welcome here.
